I’ve been thinking a lot lately about mindset, and how we take our passions, and our dreams, and work toward making them our reality.
I’ve always been a firm believer in the ability to put our thoughts, our words, and our actions out into the universe in a meaningful way that will ultimately circle back to us.
I know, it probably sounds a little hocus pocus, but stay with me here.
The first step in achieving any goal is first believing that you can achieve it. Think about a marathon runner. When they’re mapping out their training plan in their minds, and when they’re signing up for that big race, they are visualizing themselves finishing. They are imagining what they will feel like when they are handed that medal at the end. They are putting those plans out into the universe and expecting the end goal to come back to them and essentially be there to greet them as they cross that finish line.
If you think you can’t do something, then you, my friend, are absolutely right. But the moment your can’ts, turn into I-cans, you are capable of achieving anything.
Will it require work and dedication? Absolutely. It won’t be easy, but don’t sell yourself short. Having a little faith and confidence in yourself will help start a chain reaction in believing that you can do anything.
So, having said that, I’ve been wanting to devote some of my time to creating a vision board. I have personally seen over the last few years, how changing my mindset has changed my reality. By going from thinking I couldn’t accomplish my wildest dreams, to living out the life I have always wanted every single day has been incredible. Are there challenges? Definitely. Do I still have big dreams and big goals ahead? You bet I do. But the only difference is now I am equipped with the confidence to know that as long as I keep envisioning my goals and keep myself motivated working toward them, I will be able to achieve them. And I know that you are capable of doing the same.
Creating a vision board is the perfect first step, because it allows you to #1, create something – and channeling our creative side is good for the soul, and #2, it’s putting your dreams and goals right there in plain sight where you can take a moment to really focus and concentrate on them every single day.
Things to keep in mind when creating your vision board:
- These are YOUR visions, your dreams, your goals. Stay true to what’s important to you, and not what you think everyone else will be thinking you should do or what they think you should want.
- A vision board can look however you want it to. It can be full of pictures from magazines, words or quotes, or a list of ideas. It can be a board full of sticky notes. Whatever it is or however you want to create it is perfect as long as it’s staying true to you.
How to Create a Vision Board
Create a List
Identify some of the items that will go on your board. What are the goals you want to accomplish? What are the big dreams that you always felt weren’t within reach? Maybe you want to lose 15 pounds, or train for your first half marathon. Maybe you want to save up to put a down payment on a new house, or drive away into the sunset in your dream car. Maybe you want to go back to school, or finish your degree (or even start your own business). These can be a combination of small and large goals; both short-term and long-term. Whatever it is that you’re wanting, write them down first, so that way you know exactly what you want to include when you make your board.
It’s important to mention that you should also be focusing in how you want to feel vs only focusing on the things that you want. Maybe you want to feel more confident, or feel more thankful and grateful in your normal day-to-day. Maybe you want to bottle up the feeling you get every time you walk into your favorite coffeeshop; that sense of warmth, homeyness, and feeling of contentment. So maybe you’ll include a photo of that coffeeshop on your vision board to remind you of that feeling so that it’s something you can strive for creating for yourself.
Maybe you want to focus on spending more time with family, so you’ll include a family photo from your last vacation together. This board is all about YOU. Make it however you need to so that it inspires you.
Find the Images/Words That Represent These Goals
Like I mentioned in the last section, these can be a combination of anything. Look through magazines and cut out the pictures and words that appeal to you. Look for things that inspire you. Places you want to visit, people you want to make more quality time for. Look for photos or old letters and postcards that you want to include that will remind you of the relationships that are important to you; the life you’re striving to create for yourself. There is no right or wrong answer; these are all the things that are going to resonate with you.
Get a Board
This too, can be anything! A poster board from Target; a cork board, or a fancy little chalkboard from Hobby Lobby. It can be big, circular, tall, square, small.. anything will do! (I love this burlap style, or this one for a less expensive option!) Depending on what you’re using for your board, you may also need to get glue, tape, push pins, or anything else that will attach your items to the board. (These push pins are SUPER cute and come in a variety of patterns and colors!)
I would recommend making this an event. It will seem more special, and help you focus more on what you’re wanting to create. You can gather your best girlfriends and make a girls’ night of it, or even do it with someone in your family; each working on your own boards together. I would keep the TV turned off, and maybe light some candles and even pour yourself a glass of wine! Take the time to do this for YOU (notice that resounding theme?), and you are definitely special and important enough for a little special treatment and “me time” to focus on what’s important to you!
